Closing session: towards the future of OpenFOAM in wind energy.

At the end of the conference, the program includes an informal discussion about the benefits of the philosophy behind the open-source and open-science topics and its application in the wind industry.

The round opens by presenting the initiative started by CENER under the framework of an existing EU project for the creation of a open-source community model for the simulation of atmospheric boundary layer useful for wind resource assessment activities. The meeting intents to discuss the ideas and motivation behind this endeavor as well as current interest from the industry. It also explores the potential interest and suggestions from all the attendees, as well as their willingness of joining this effort, or other similar initiatives surrounding openFoam developments for the benefit of the wind energy industry. The session will have a short break if needed.

The discussion also embraces some topics regarding the future of openfoam in the wind industry such as:

  • Transparent and systematic validation & verification plans for openfoam-based models
  • Improving documentation
  • Community development of new openfoam functionalities.
  • Lessons learned from communities in other industrial/academic fields?.
  • openfoam.orgopenfoam.com and openfoam_extended: Advantages, disadvantages and code integration.

The session concludes with an important discussion related to the future of SOWE.
